At 43, I still catch myself having this fear. Especially when I am very tired, or just messed up from something where I am not completely alert. My cats enjoy helping me have this fear as they attack me under my bed when playing. Great fun for them, not so much for me.
This is a great little story about the boogey man. It is a story we're all told as a child so we would stay in bed. Little does anyone know it really screws us up, even if we don't admit it.
