Review:

This was such a good retelling of Sleepy Beauty!  I thought it would be an ok retelling because I enjoyed Starling House & how it was written (I really dislike fairy tales).  My expectations where totally blown out of the water!  Alix Harrow is quickly becoming a favorite author for me.

I don't know if the princess being lesbian is over done or not for some, but it isn't for me.  I love how a lot of the versions of Sleeping Beauty was mentioned & taken into account.  I love how the 'hero' of the story was not the one who ended up with the girl either.

This book was an awesome fuck you to patriarchy without making it all about that.  I loved how it pointed to things that are accepted but are so very wrong in the world & not making the whole book focus on it.  Subtle digs as it where that stick in your brain waiting to pop up one night you can't sleep & you start thinking about it.  I think that is one way change will be made - making you think about it later on.  Ruminating over it.

Goodreads Description:

It's Zinnia Gray's twenty-first birthday, which is extra-special because it's the last birthday she'll ever have. When she was young, an industrial accident left Zinnia with a rare condition. Not much is known about her illness, just that no one has lived past twenty-one.

Her best friend Charm is intent on making Zinnia's last birthday special with a full sleeping beauty experience, complete with a tower and a spinning wheel. But when Zinnia pricks her finger, something strange and unexpected happens, and she finds herself falling through worlds, with another sleeping beauty, just as desperate to escape her fate.
